Midiocre, by Dustyroom · Effective 9 July 2026 · Last updated 9 July 2026
Midiocre is a free chord progression workbench. These terms set out what you may do with it, what you own, and the limits of our responsibility. Please read section 4 on hearing safety in particular.
By installing or using Midiocre, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the application.
Midiocre is free to use but is not open source. Dustyroom retains all rights, title, and interest in the application, its source code, its name, and its visual design.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Midiocre on devices you control, for any purpose including commercial music work.
You may not sell, rent, sublicence, or redistribute the application; present it as your own; remove or obscure its copyright or branding; or reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble it, except to the extent that such restriction is expressly prohibited by applicable law.
You own everything you create with Midiocre. We claim no rights whatsoever over your chord progressions, custom voicings, or any MIDI, WAV, or JSON file you export. We never receive them, so we could not claim them if we wanted to.
You are free to use, perform, record, publish, and sell music made with Midiocre, with no royalty, credit, or attribution owed to us.
One caveat, offered as fact rather than as a disclaimer: chord progressions are short, and Midiocre generates them from common harmonic conventions. It is entirely possible — likely, even — for it to produce a sequence identical to one found in existing music. Chord progressions are generally not protectable by copyright on their own, but you remain responsible for clearing any work you release. We make no representation that Midiocre's output is original or free of third-party rights.
Midiocre is free. If you choose to support its development through Ko-fi, that payment is a voluntary gift, not the purchase of a product, a licence, or a service.
Donations are handled entirely by Ko-fi under their own terms, and are non-refundable by us; we never receive your payment details and cannot process a refund. Supporter mode is a setting stored on your own device. It carries no warranty, no guaranteed feature set, no service level, and no promise of support or of future releases. We may change what supporter mode unlocks at any time.
Midiocre produces sound, and it can be loud. How loud depends on your volume setting, your operating system's volume, and the headphones, speakers, or amplifier you have connected — none of which Midiocre controls or can measure.
Prolonged or sudden exposure to loud sound can cause permanent hearing damage. Set your system volume low before you begin, and raise it gradually. Do not use headphones at high volume.
Midiocre applies a limiter to its master output, which is intended to prevent harsh clipped peaks. This is a technical safeguard against distortion, not a volume cap and not a hearing protection device. It cannot prevent damage from a loud playback system, and it may fail or be bypassed as a result of a defect, a misconfiguration, an unexpected MIDI input, or a fault in your audio hardware or drivers.
Software can misbehave. If you are troubleshooting audio problems, changing devices, or testing MIDI input, remove your headphones first. You are responsible for the volume at which you listen and for any damage to your hearing or to your audio equipment resulting from levels you set.
If you experience ringing in your ears, discomfort, or any change in your hearing, stop immediately and consult a medical professional.
Midiocre is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that Midiocre will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure; that defects will be corrected; that it will run on any particular device or operating system; or that it will not lose your work. Your progressions are stored in your browser's local storage, which your browser, operating system, or another application may clear without warning. Export anything you care about.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Dustyroom and its contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, nor for loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, or data, nor for damage to hearing, audio equipment, or other property, however caused and on any theory of liability, arising out of or relating to your use of or inability to use Midiocre — even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to Midiocre shall not exceed the total amount you have paid us for it in the twelve months preceding the claim. Midiocre is free of charge, so this amount is ordinarily zero. Voluntary donations are gifts and are not payment for the application.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. In many jurisdictions this includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for any statutory rights afforded to you as a consumer that cannot be waived by agreement. If you are a consumer, you may have rights that these terms cannot override, and nothing here affects them.
Midiocre links to Ko-fi for donations and to our website for contact. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their content, availability, or practices. Your use of them is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue Midiocre, in whole or in part, at any time and without notice. We may revise these terms; the "last updated" date above will change, and continuing to use Midiocre after a revision means you accept it. If you do not accept a revision, stop using the application.
Your licence terminates automatically if you breach these terms. Sections 2, 5, 6, and 9 survive termination.
These terms are governed by the laws of Ukraine, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of the city of Kyiv, Ukraine shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute — save that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you retain the benefit of any mandatory protections of the law of your country of residence.
If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, that provision shall be limited or severed to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall continue in full force. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Dustyroom regarding Midiocre.
